Teaching at Le Rosey

A Role that Reaches Beyond the Classroom

Le Rosey is a distinctly Swiss boarding school with an exceptionally international community of students and staff. Polyglot by nature, it brings students, teachers, and their families together in a community that values academic rigour, has a passion for sports, arts and technology, and cares deeply about human connection.

Located between Lake Geneva and the Alps, Le Rosey is shaped as much by its setting as by the close-knit nature of its community. Classes are deliberately small and admission is selective, ensuring a learning environment where students are known individually and held to high expectations. School life continues well beyond the classroom, through concerts, expeditions, trips and school-wide traditions.

Each winter since 1916, the school community has moved to its alpine campus in Gstaad. Lessons continue within a winter timetable that integrates a structured skiing programme alongside regular classes, with the change of campus reshaping the daily rhythm of school life.

Professional development is built into life at Le Rosey through school-led initiatives such as EduFest, EduTech, biweekly internal collaborative networks, and whole-staff CPD and off-sites, in addition to internal support to attend conferences and programmes throughout the year. Training and support for individual projects that fit the school’s educational direction are always encouraged.

Educators who thrive at Le Rosey

Teachers who excel at Le Rosey have deep knowledge of their students, combined with an eagerness to immerse themselves fully in school life. They continue to refine their teaching, considering how new technologies and changing ways of learning shape their approach.

The school day does not end when lessons finish. The boarding model creates daily contact between teachers and students, and conversations carry on over meals and in the boarding houses. Teachers also participate in clubs, weekend expeditions and programmes and many offer enrichment opportunities beyond classes.

By sharing so much of the day with students, teachers come to know them well, including how they work and when something isn’t quite right. This allows them to support personal development and wellbeing as closely as academic progress, and to help each student discover what they care about.

Application Procedure

Vacant posts are advertised on this website and in the Times Educational Supplement (TES). All applications for advertised posts should be sent as indicated in the advert.

A complete application typically includes:

  • a letter of interest outlining the candidate’s educational approach and motivation; special attention will be given to letters that include genuine examples and experiences and do not read like they were AI-generated.
  • a complete curriculum vitae.
  • a recent photograph.
  • the contact details of three referees, who will not be contacted without prior approval.
  • optionally, teachers able to provide a filmed lesson are encouraged to do so.

There are three steps to the interview process:

  • A careful review of every application
  • Depending on the position, long-listed candidates attend an online interview
  • Short-listed candidates are invited to campus for a full immersion day including class observation, further in-person interviews, meetings with students and relevant Heads of Departments. This is an opportunity to get a full perspective of a teacher’s life at Le Rosey. References are contacted following the immersion day.

Important considerations

Le Rosey is a bilingual English-French boarding school with its own special character. It is neither a British boarding school on the continent, an American prep school in Europe, nor a lycée français à l’étranger avec internat. While it draws on elements of all three, those influences have come together to form something uniquely Rosey.

Candidates should hold at least a first degree and a teaching qualification. We particularly welcome:

  • knowledge and experience of the International Baccalaureate or French Baccalaureate, ideally supported by formal training
  • experience working in international or multicultural educational settings
  • a working knowledge of French, or a willingness to develop it
  • experience of, or a clear commitment to, boarding school life
  • a commitment to holistic educational principles
  • a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people

Applications from outside the EU/EFTA

Swiss regulations make recruiting non-EU/EFTA citizens longer and more complex. Candidates without an EU/EFTA passport or an existing Swiss work permit are still welcome to apply.

Every application is considered on its merits, and where the profile and the role justify it, the school is prepared to take on the permit process.

Speculative applications

Le Rosey welcomes speculative applications throughout the year. These are reviewed by the Deputy Director General and retained on file where appropriate.

Safeguarding and child protection

Le Rosey is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to appropriate safeguarding checks, in line with Swiss law and international best practice. Candidates must be willing to engage fully with the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures.

Diversity and Inclusion

Le Rosey is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through valuing diversity. Staff, students, and teachers work toward the furthering of an inclusive and supportive environment. As such, we encourage and welcome applications from candidates with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the seasonal move work?

Le Rosey operates across two fully residential campuses. The main campus is located in Rolle, between Geneva and Lausanne, and is easily accessible by train and car.

From January to March, the school community moves to its alpine campus in Gstaad. The move happens during the Christmas and Spring holidays with blue trunks appearing a few days before around campus. Teachers’ children too young to be at Le Rosey are schooled in a lovely temporary Ecole des Benjamins on campus. The seasonal move forms an integral part of the school’s rhythm and educational model, with winter sports, including skiing, incorporated into the weekly programme.

What school facilities are available for staff?

Throughout the school year, students and staff benefit from a wide range of sports (swimming pools, tennis, padel, gym, beach volleyball, etc.) and recreational facilities (sailing centre by the lake, BBQ pits, off-season mountain apartments, etc.). When not required for classes or school activities, these facilities are available for staff use according to a published schedule.

Is accommodation provided for intern (resident) teachers?

Accommodation for intern teachers is provided by the school and fully covered. Teachers and their families are housed in furnished, on-campus flats within the boarding houses in Rolle and Gstaad.

Apartments are suitable for family life and are pet-friendly. Intern families also benefit from full board, with three meals provided daily throughout the year.

Does Le Rosey support staff with families relocating?

The children of staff members are educated at Le Rosey. Further information is provided during the interview process.

What does a typical school day look like?

The daily schedule at Le Rosey varies between the Rolle and Gstaad campuses.

In Rolle, classes typically run from 08:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday. Late afternoons are dedicated to the Sports–Arts–Technology programme, which takes place from 16:00 to 19:00. Evenings are mostly for study, with regular concerts and talks in the Paul & Henri Carnal Hall and Philo.

In Gstaad, academic classes are held each morning from Monday to Saturday, with additional classes on Monday and Thursday afternoons. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, students participate in the winter sports programme.

A more detailed daily timetable is available here.

Will I be expected to take part in evening or weekend activities?

Yes. Teachers regularly share meals with students and take part in whole-school events. They are also encouraged to join expeditions, trips, and other activities that shape the boarding experience during evenings and weekends.

What boarding duties are intern teachers expected to take on?

Intern teachers typically cover one or two evenings a week and two to four weekends a term.

Many teachers also choose to become tutors, for which an additional stipend is provided. Tutors meet with a small group of students regularly.

Beyond teaching and boarding duties, all teachers are expected to participate in ongoing professional development. This includes maintaining a personal learning plan, participating in school events, and contributing to departmental and cross-departmental initiatives.

Which curricula are taught?

In the final two years, every Roséen follows either the French Baccalaureate or the full International Baccalaureate Diploma programme. In the past, Le Rosey has built its own bi-cultural programme allowing students to choose both diplomas. This programme largely draws from a combination of the British National Curriculum and the French Education Nationale.

What is the standard teaching load?

Boarding teachers are currently expected to perform their boarding duties (see relevant FAQ) and teach 24 periods of class, attend regular department meetings, and participate in professional development, including peer observations and collaborative course preparation; they attend and engage in regular whole-school events and take part in school life by supporting a club, partaking in trips and expeditions.

What is the standard class size?

Average class size at Le Rosey is 9 students. Depending on the subject, some classes may have up to 16 students.

What is the demographic and language profile of the student body?
Students at Le Rosey come from over 70 countries and speak nearly as many languages. By design, they remain in the minority, as a strict 10% quota applies during the admissions process.
What is the typical faculty retention rate?

Average tenure at Le Rosey is 12 years. While some staff bring energy and fresh ideas for three or four years, most fall in love with the school and the community in the long run.

A well-distributed staff age range, along with regular retirements and a growing team, allows for a healthy addition of about 6 to 15 new teachers each year.

What funding is available for Professional Development?

Beyond the impressive in-school EduFest, EduTech, INSETS, departmental trainings and Collaborative Networks, a generous provision is made for teachers attending conferences, workshops and training and eager to earn advanced degrees.

While time away from the classroom is sometimes a discussion point, budget is much less so when the request fits the school’s vision and overarching professional development themes.

What if I don’t speak French?

Tailored French and English classes are offered to all staff at Le Rosey and very popular. They lead to official certifications.
