The Kelly Tchen Piano Challenge

The Kelly Tchen Piano Challenge is a personal milestone.  Each piano performance is a maximum of 8 minutes long, combine two different musical styles, and must be delivered entirely from memory. A professional jury listens for technical precision, but also for the qualities that reveal a musician’s development: interpretation, expression, and composure.

This year saw two winners from Class 1: Sebastian, who impressed with a brilliant take on Scarlatti’s  “Sonata in D minor” and Chopin’s “Ballade no. 1”, and Marei, who performed beautifully a trifecta composed of Rameau’s “Les Cyclopes”,  the second movement of Janàček’s “Piano Sonata 1.X.1905”, and the twelfth of Scriabin’s “12 Études, Op. 8”.
