The OSR and Alex Joel

In his brief introduction to the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande concert under the baton of roséen Alex Joel, Philippe Gudin, Le Rosey’s former Directeur-général, revealed that Alex’s family had entrusted his education to Le Rosey with the injunction that he should be prepared for a career in law, engineering or something equally serious – but not music! The school can feel proud of its failure: the OSR concert clearly showed the talent of this rising star of the classical music world. Beethoven’s Coriolan was followed by a powerful performance of Shostakovich’s technically challenging First Cello Concerto with Harriet Krighe a passionate and accomplished young soloist. After the interval, Alex (without a score) conducted a warm, elegant and vibrant perfomance of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony. And as might be expected of a true roséen like Alex, conversations with friends went on well into the night…
