NEW WINTER CAMPUS

In 1916, the young Rosey director, Henri Carnal, son of the founder of a school created in 1880, took a decision which would profoundly mark the Rosey legend: he would move his whole school up to the mountains in order to escape the winter fog which settles over Lake Geneva and offer his students, whilst continuing their regular school programme, a term of sun, snow and winter sports.

Nearly a century later, Le Rosey, which never casts off either its intelligent or its crazy traditions, has remained loyal to this annual seasonal move to Gstaad for the winter!  Yet, our school continues to grow, and the 7,600m2 which we currently occupy on the Ried is no longer big enough, and makes further development impossible.  Despite the extension of several buildings and the acquisition of land around our winter campus, by 2005, it became clear that we needed to look for a solution to ensure that all our academic and extra-curricular activities at Rosey continue in the way we want them to.

In 2010, after three years of careful research and with the help of the local authorities and our Gstaad friends, we have found a perfect plot of land above Schönried which has the advantage of exceptional views and plenty of sunshine.  These 4 hectares of land, which are currently designated for agriculture, will be re-assigned, through a plan d’affectation, in order to enable us to build our new campus.  Having reviewed the architectural proposals, at the end of 2010 we made the decision to mandate a local consortium, Jaggi, Matti and Hauswirth, to work with Le Rosey and their consultant architect, Mr Jean Brugger on the project for the campus.   In collaboration with the services from the commune of Saanen and the canton of Bern, the project is now moving forward and will be presented to the people of Saanen in mid-April.

Designing a whole campus from scratch is quite an undertaking requiring a forward-looking vision of Rosey’s development.  We also need to leave our successors with plenty of space for the future.  We are working on a balanced programme and to a strict budget; the sale of our current campus on the Ried will allow us to purchase the land in Schönried, to build the new campus and to finance in part the Carnal Hall in Rolle; however, these financial transactions require fine timing as the building permits have not yet been obtained!

In 2016, Le Rosey will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its first year in Saanenland.  Gstaad and the school have grown together and have seen their reputations grow and gradually extend over Swiss and European borders.  We all want this “love story” to continue for many years to come in a spirit of mutual cooperation and loyal friendship.
